Personal Depression

I’m in a deep funk lately. It’s not because my Lotusphere abstract didn’t get selected. I can’t explain it. It’s my job, my work in the Knights of Columbus, my home, everything…. I’ve pissed off one of my Knights of Columbus idols so much that he didn’t even speak to me this weekend, and just tonight, I’ve pissed off one of my Lotus idols. (I’ll give you a hint: We ALL read his blog!) That’s been the way my life has been going lately…I’m alone on this inflatable boat in the middle of an ocean…and I CAN’T SWIM!

Sorry to bother all of you with this, but I just don’t know what to do anymore….

  • Hang in there man. It’s the holidays, and everything seems to amp up during that timeframe. So even little things seem big. The good news is you have your health, and your family. And really, truly, in the end, that’s all that matters.

Jobs just occupy our time between family, and you should never have idols, strive to BE one

But, if you really can’t shake this, it truly may be a chemical problem, and there’s no shame in that. Duffbert is pretty public about how medications have helped him. You may want to drop him a line.

Anyway, hang in there man. You’ll get over this hump, even if it seems like a mountain right now!

If it makes you feel any better (as in the misery loves company sort of way) I’ve been pretty down and out the last week myself. I’m chalking it up to the crappy weather myself…

    Take Care,
    Grey

  • Hi Ray,
I know this blues times too. A lack of sunlight can be one reason. What helps me in this situations is my personal emergency program:
    – Get a lot of Vitamin C
    – St. Johns capsules (make you more light sensitive)
    – Heavy workouts in the gym (feeling you mucles hurting chaeses away blues thoughts)
    – long swims
    – Take a sun bath twice a week (Solarium will do if California is too far off — be careful you might get a nasty sunburn with the St. John’s herbs).

  • I don’t know what you’re talking about, Ray… I’m not pissed off at you!

Seriously, everyone goes through funks like this. When I end up in situations like this, I tend to step back, drop into lurker mode, and allow thinks to settle down before I venture back in the water.

Oh, and I tend to read a lot more.

  • I’ll chime in as well and wish you the best. I also have a magic solution that will cure all that ails you. It is Websphere, I mean Websphere Portal, er, I mean Workplace, oh I don’t know. Just take some Notes and call me in the morning.

  • Some words of advice…Remember that you are in control of your destiny. As a career counseler once told me, “You don’t have to do anything.” You always have a choice, even when those choices are difficult. If you’re in a funk about your career, create a list of what you want to learn or want to do, and attack it a little each day. A path is built one stone at a time. If your routines are starting to bore you, then maybe its time to establish some new ones. Think about what you’re really interested in, and pursue those interests. If everything you do is based solely on the expectations of others, then you’ll never be happy, as you end up making everyone happy but yourself.
