Lotus Notes Client Question: Can History be configured?

This question goes out to those of you that are the Lotus Notes experts out there. (For the rest of you, talk amongst yourselves… I’ll give you a topic… Chuck Norris can lead a horse to water AND make it drink… Discuss!)

The History folder (located on the bookmark bar) keeps 7 days of activity. Can this number be configured? I can’t find anything in the forums or the technotes. As an incentive, this answer could be someone’s ‘Show-n-Tell Thursday’ topic…

Problem with new Plazes beta

I’ve been a user of Plazes since Ed Brill mentioned it a while ago. Today, Ed mentioned that there was a new Plazes launcher/client, called Plazer. I’ve loved it, and it’s a lot of fun to see where people are at, and to ‘discover’ new places. Well, I downloaded the updated launcher/client, but I’m having problems. When I try to log in, I get this dialog box:
A picture named M2
I love this service, so any help from anyone would be appreciated.

Once I get this going, if you are interested in Plazes (even if you never move around), instead of registering yourself, let me invite you. I get ‘karma points’ for inviting others. (Hey, if Ed Brill can ask, so can I!!!)

Happy Birthday to the Princess of the Pridelands

Like Rocky, Jennifer’s and my lives changed forever, except it was only 4 years ago. She’s the reason I get up in the morning. She’s the reason I put up with things I never used to before. She’s the reason I want to move everyone to Florida (the real Pridelands). She is part of my Circle of Life. She makes every day fun. I run home from work (when I get to come home) just to play with her. Everything I teach her, she absorbs. She’s a sponge. I can’t wait to teach her more….

Thank you Kiara. Happy Birthday… I LOVE YOU, PRINCESS! I hope that I’m worthy of you!

Show-n-Tell: No MS Word or OpenOffice… No Problem

Yea, I know I’m a day late… Whadda you want for nothin’? Rrrrrrrrrubber Biscuit?
This week, it’s not about what I’m doing, but what I might need to do in an emergency. Here we go…

Have you ever heard of Michael Robertson? You might not know him, but you probably know about his business ventures… Ever heard of MP3.com? Linspire? SIPphone.com? MP3tunes? He’s the man behind all of those ventures. He’s also behind today’s tech tip. If you’re not subscribing to his weekly newsletter, you should. Go to michaelrobertson.com and sign up today.

Have you ever been in front of a PC (or a Mac or a Linux box) and wanted to create a quick Word document and discovered that the machine didn’t have Word installed? This has happened to me at a few client sites (in the classroom). What do you do then? Pull out Wordpad or your OpenOffice.org install CDs? Now you don’t have to…

Michael Robertson announced in his weekly newsletter the start of ajaxWrite.com, an alternative for Microsoft Word that will run on Macintosh, Windows or Linux computers. What also makes it cool is how it doesn’t require you to ‘install’ software. Just take a Firefox browser to http://www.ajaxwrite.com/, then within a few seconds, you can create, edit or print .doc files. And this is just the beginning….

From Michael’s newsletter:
But ajaxWrite is just the start. We have a library of applications we have been working on to replace most of the standard PC software titles. Every week we will launch a new sophisticated program on Wednesday at 12:00 PST on ajaxlaunch.com. These programs will push the boundaries of what people believe is possible today with web-delivered software. These programs look and operate much like their traditional software cousins, but are cross-platform, loaded dynamically, and are available to users at no charge. I’m convinced if you try a few of these products you will understand how the software business will fundamentally change.

I tried it out yesterday and it was very slow, but today it’s working a lot better. It’s not a complete replacement for Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org, but it’s a good start, and for over 75% of the people out there, the need to purchase or install these products goes away. What I also like about this is that it’s a ‘work in progress’, which means that as new features are added, I get them. I don’t have to worry about installing upgrades. This is great technology, and I believe that Michael Robertson is just getting warmed up. I’m expecting more great things from him and this venture. Bravo Michael!

So get out there and add this stuff to your Geek arsenal TODAY!!!

On the Road Again

I’m sitting here with over an hour to spare waiting for my plane to arrive. I’m heading off again to Chicago to train once again. I found out today that I will be spending 3 more days in Chi-Town in a couple of weeks, then a full week there two weeks after that. Then, there is a possibility that there will be 3 more days of training beyond all of this.

I never minded the travel before, but with Kiara getting older, and the need to get out of our current dwelling and move to greener pastures, I’m really interested in a position that allows me more time at home. I also may have a need to get a second job to pay for a new house and private school for Kiara. All of this travelling prevents me from doing this. Why doesn’t Jennifer go to work? Honestly, we don’t have the ‘free or low cost’ family babysitter that other families have, so Kiara would be spending her time between school in the fall (half day) and some sort of day care. Doing this may end up costing us more than if Jennifer didn’t work. And, if I have to go out of town on business, that just places more stress and hardship on Jennifer and Kiara. It’s enough that they have to deal with me.

I also noticed that I’m not getting a lot of sleep because of all of the travel and because of my natural tendency to worry about my training sessions, work and family. This is starting to take a toll on me physically and mentally. I’m tired and I want to get off of the ride soon.

There has to be something better than this…

I’m a Part of Wrestling History (again)… First TNA Wrestling House Show

As many of you know, I am a huge fan of professional wrestling. I always have been and always will be. I think that I still want to be a wrestling manager or a referee. (Before you start commenting back… Yes, I know that it’s staged, but these people are still athletes in my opinion.)

Last night, I had the most incredible time of my life. I attended the 1st ever TNA Wrestling house show, which was held at the Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI. All I can say after watching it was "the WWE is in BIG TROUBLE… This stuff is the real deal!"

The event was being co-hosted by TNA Wrestling and Psychopathic Records (the label of the Insane Clown Posse). There was not a bad match the entire night. Everyone there had a great time, and I hope that they come back again. I’ve been to many WWE shows, including some pay-per-views, and none of them have compared to the excellent wrestling I saw last night. (I have to admit that I enjoyed Wrestlemania III better, but I was much younger then.)

Also VERY INVOLVED with making this night a success was Rudy "The Rude Boy" Hill, a man I can call a longtime friend. We grew up on the same block 2 doors away from each other. From the time that we were kids, he loved 3 things; his family, music and wrestling. To this day, he’s living his dream. I’m very proud of him, and I’m sorry that I haven’t kept in touch with him. I promise to do a better job in keeping in touch with him in the future.

Rudy… I mean, Rude Boy, I’m proud of you! You’ve done well!

Show-n-Tell Thursday: Notes Client Trick

I’ve been training some endusers on the finer points of the Lotus Notes client, and I forgot about this trick until recently, so I bring it to you with some Irish love (Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day):

There is a folder called ‘Create’ under the ‘More Bookmarks’ folder on the bookmark bar.
A picture named M2

In it, you will find bookmarks to create a new memo, calendar entry, contact, or to do item… all of the things you can click (if you turn on that option) from the Welcome Page. There is also a new button on the Universal toolbar as well. (It looks like a folder.)
A picture named M3

You can take advantage of the ‘Create’ folder to build your own custom ‘create new document’ items for applications that you use a lot. First, open up your application in the Notes client and then create a new document. (For this example, I’ll create a new Blogsphere entry.) All I did then was bookmark the unused new ‘Blog Entry’ document to the ‘Create’ folder. It now looks like this…
A picture named M4

Now, check it again, but this time, from the ‘New’ button on the toolbar…
A picture named M5

There you have it… a new way to create documents fast!

Now you know…’cause knowing is half the battle!!!
