Nominations for IBM Champions are due tomorrow (October 15, 2013)

This is just a reminder to everyone (including myself) that nominations for IBM Champions are due tomorrow, October 15, 2013. If you haven’t done so yet, go to http://ibm.co/nominatechampion and nominate someone today. You can nominate more than one person, and yes, you can nominate yourself. (It’s a good idea to do that actually, because you know more about you than anyone else…)

Good luck!

That’s the kind of guy Bruce Elgort is… (Thank You Bruce! #ThanksBruce)

At my first Lotusphere, I was nervous, shy and unsure of what I was doing. I was reading blogs by other people, and knew of Bruce Elgort from his blog, and this incredible site called NotesOSS.org (now known as OpenNTF.org) that he and Nathan Freeman put together. Imagine… open source Notes applications and code, all ready to use. I knew that I needed to meet these guys and thank them for making my life easier.

As it turned out, when I introduced myself to Bruce, he immediately started introducing me to everyone else… all my Notes ‘heroes’, and immediately began to make me feel comfortable and welcomed. That’s the kind of guy Bruce Elgort is…

Flash forward to a dark time in my life when I thought that I would not only be denied funding for Lotusphere, but thought about leaving the Notes/Domino world completely. Along comes Bruce Elgort with a proposition for me… OpenNTF.org needed a booth babe, and I needed a ticket to Lotusphere, and before I knew it, I was one of the ugliest booth babes in the planet, spending my nights and weekends before the big event downloading the OpenNTF.org apps and trying them out so I could be a subject matter expert on their functionality. I was able to do this a couple of times for the organization, which kept my Notes/Domino batteries recharged until I was able to find a better job. That’s the kind of guy Bruce Elgort is…

I’ve made comments on Twitter, Facebook and my blog, and immediately received a ping from Bruce consoling me, congratulating me, advising me or just saying hello. That’s the kind of guy Bruce Elgort is…

I consider Bruce and Gayle Elgort two of the most important people in my life, whether they realize it or not. I’m not just talking in my technical world, but in my life overall! My wife knows this, so much so that she started following Gayle and Bruce in social media when I wasn’t keeping her up on how my trips to Florida were going. Bruce has a way of embracing us all and making us feel like family… including the good natured teasing! Only family could do that! That’s the kind of guy Bruce Elgort is…

Bruce, THANK YOU for OpenNTF, for IdeaJam, for everything you’ve done for the community, for your calls, for your emails, for your pings, for your love and zest for life and the good in all of us, and most of all, for your friendship! #ThanksBruce

On IdeaJam.net – Support Fingerprint ID system (Touch ID) as a device security method in IBM Notes Traveler

ideajam_logoOn IdeaJam.net, I posted an idea about using their Fingerprint ID system (which Apple calls ‘Touch ID security’) as a supported ‘device password’ when setting up an IBM Notes Traveler policy. Take a look and promote this idea here.

Heading to MWLUG 2013? Don’t forget your best homebrew or favorite local brewery’s beer!

It’s not too late to sign up for MWLUG 2013, the Midwest ‘Lotus’ User Group Conference, in Indianapolis. Register HERE now!!!

One of my ‘brothers in beer’, Gregg Eldred, was scheduled to coordinate a new event this year, but due to scheduling/work conflicts, it’s been passed along to me. This gives you an opportunity to show your homebrewing skills! You don’t make your own beer? Why not? Seriously, if you have a beer from a microbrewery/brewpub by your house that you think is awesome, that will count also! Bring some to MWLUG 2o13 and compete. Here is the information from the website:

MWLUG 2013 Charity Brewfest Competition

04:00 PM – 06:00 PM – Conrad Room

Do you think you have created a great home brew or wine!!! Do you think your local micro-brewery beer is out of this world!!! Then bring them with you to MWLUG 2013 and lets find out.

We are happy to announce the MWLUG 2013 Charity Brewfest Competition. It will be held on Wednesday August 21, 2013 4:00 PM just before the MWLUG Wednesday Exhibitor Showcase Reception. This competition is open for all attendees. We would like to thank our sponsor CDW for making this event possible.

Ray Bilyk and his panel of experienced judges will taste the different entries and select the winners of this competition. [Original organizer] Gregg [Eldred] has selected some interesting prizes for this competition.

In order to participate in this competition, the submission fee is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the MWLUG Oklahoma Tornado Relief Fund. You can submit as many entries as you would like. For each entry, please bring at least two 12 ounce bottles. All competitors will need to sign a waiver. All nationally distributed micro-brewery beer do not qualify. Registration for this event will be on Wednesday.

For every dollar that we raise in this event, our sponsor Phora Group will match a dollar. We are working with other sponsors for additional matching funds that will all benefit the Oklahoma residences that have been devastated by the recent horrific tornadoes.

Thank you to CDW and Phora Group for sponsoring and matching funds raised from this event! Thank you also to organizer Richard Moy for trusting me with this. I hope to live up to the high standards that Gregg set. Thanks also to Gregg Eldred for getting the prize for the big winner.

Hope to see you all there… Cheers!

Weird issue printing from Lotus Notes (with resolution)

Got a weird one at work today…

User was reporting that when they tried to print certain mail messages in Lotus Notes (on Windows), the client would close or crash. After upgrading the client and reinstalling the client, I finally got some support files over to IBM.

They came back with what seems to be a simple fix:
Add BrowserRenderPrintNotes=1 to the user’s NOTES.INI file

This tells Notes to use the Notes print dialog box for messages instead of passing off the print dialog to the browser. It seems to happen with messages that includes MIME/HTML. I found a reference to it here: IBM Technote – Windows Print dialog opens instead of Notes Print dialog when trying to print external message (Technote #1291150).

This seems to be working fine so far. Not sure why it just started happening…

I miss you, Dad!

On this date 21 years ago, my father passed away. It was the first time that I ever saw him weak, and as I saw the life leave his eyes, I saw that I thought was fear. I always thought that it was him fearing what was next. I now realize that he was fearful for what was going to happen to all of us left behind.
After many trials and tribulations, I think that we’re hanging in there.
As I’m getting older, I’m seeing someone familiar looking at me in the mirror…

I miss you, Dad!
