A Geek’s way to follow Santa tonight

If you’re like me, you are impressed how much Santa has evolved with the times. He and his elves (including the ones working at NORAD) are using some of the latest technology to keep us informed where he is (so we can go to sleep before he gets close to us, right?).

I saw this entry from PinStack.com that mentions how we can follow Santa using Google Maps Mobile. What I’m also excited about is that Santa (using an elf at NORAD) is using Twitter!

Geek on, Santa! Geek on!

Lazyweb: Can anyone help me find these Domino stats?

Our administration team received a request to find out the following stats:

  • Average number of in-box messages
  • Average number of items in Notes mail folders

According to the person making the request, “These do not need to be exact numbers, just as close as possible without taking too much effort to get the answers.”

I can’t wrap my mind around how to even begin… can anyone help me?

Interesting anniversaries today – November 10th

The US Marine Corps were organized on this date in 1775. I’ve had an opportunity to meet a few marines over my lifetime, and for every Marine I’ve ever met, I was glad they were on our side defending our country and its interests.

Also on this date in 1969, ‘Sesame Street’ debuts, but for the life of me, I still can’t tell you how to get there… but I keep looking (and watching)!

On a more somber note, on this date in 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sinks on Lake Superior, killing 29 crewmembers.

SNTF: How to stop your BES from trying to access a Domino Server

It’s been a while since I’ve done a ‘Show-n-Tell’, and I meant to do this a few weeks ago, but ‘baby’ happens…

One of our sites were going to have major electrical work done over the weekend, which meant that the Domino Server at that site would have to go down.

We had no problem with this, but the BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) was going to scream that it could not access the data for those users located there. We had to find a way to prevent the BES from kicking back error after error.

Thanks to RIM Support and my colleague, a way was discovered, and it was very simple.

From the Blackberry Manager, select ‘User Groups’, then create a group for your users. (In my case, my group name was ‘SiteName Users’.) Next, select the server, then right click on the column header to get to the Column Chooser dialog box. Add ‘Mail Server’ to the visible columns, then select OK. Now sort on that column, then select all of the users that are on the server in question. Next, right click, and select ‘Assign to Group’, then select the group you just created.

Now that you have all of the users from a specific server in a group, you can go back to ‘User Groups’, then select and right click on the group, and select ‘Disable Redirection’ like in the picture below:

It takes a while, but it eventually tells the BES to stop ‘talking’ with the user stuff.

Once the servers were back up online, I went in and enabled redirection:

After that, everything was gravy.

I hope that this tip helps others… Let me know in the comments!

Anyone using Domino Admin client R7 in a mixed R6.5/7 environment?

All of our clients are R6.5 right now, but we want to start testing any changes for a possible R7 client release. There are also colleagues that are interested in getting their certifications upgraded for R7 before the end of the year.

So does anyone know of any issues with R7 clients accessing R6.5 Domino Servers? Oh, and before you ask, we are in the process of upgrading our servers to R7, but it may not be until January 2009.

Twelve years ago

Twelve years ago, I married my best friend. She has always been the one to bring me back when I’m in a real dark place. She has been the mother of my two beautiful children. In some cases, she has been simply ‘my partner in crime’.

Jennifer, you keep getting more beautiful each day. I was the luckiest man in the world from the time we started dating. Thank you for the wonderful ride so far (including having to have our anniversary dinner today while I was ‘on call’… and having to reschedule our dinner reservation tonight 3 times). I’m going to do my best to keep the next 12 years as interesting as the first 12. I love you… and you are still ‘Beautiful in My Eyes’!

My Lotusphere Abstracts are now on IdeaJam – Please vote on them!

Go forth and vote…

I submitted my abstracts to IdeaJam. Please go there and vote (hopefully to PROMOTE) on them. While they’re there, check out some of the other ones as well. Comments are very appreciated. By the way, you don’t have to attend Lotusphere to vote on these:

This is one I didn’t submit as an actual BOF, but I still think that it would be fun to do… What do you think?

Lotusphere 2009 Abstract Submissions due this Friday at 12 Noon

With all the excitement of the new edition to the Pridelands, I’ve been out of the loop with respect to the Lotusphere Abstract deadline. My employer is almost certainly not sending me, so I was banking on trying to present again. What I was not banking on was my braincells being fried from lack of sleep. I know I have until Friday, but I didn’t have a useful idea to present before my wife had the baby…

Oh mighty Lotusphere gods, inspire me to have something that I can present as an abstract (or work with someone who does) by Friday at 12 noon. Amen!
